I want to express my deep appreciation to Simon Sanchez High School, its students and the village of Yigo for hosting the new candidates forum. (recently). The forum was organized by SSHS students, and they did an excellent job creating an environment for public discourse and allowing all participants to listen to those of us who are seeking public office in the upcoming election.
I was especially grateful for the opportunity to introduce myself to the several hundred attending as a candidate for the Guam Legislature, to speak about my work experience in the private and public sectors, as well as my perspectives shaped by being a daughter of Guam, a mother of two and a wife of a first responder.
I am hopeful that my views to strengthen Guam and our families resonated with those participating. If I earn their vote, I am determined to increase access to health care, create job opportunities for those entering the workforce, and enact necessary measures to make our community safer for our youth and families.
A strong Guam can only be accomplished if our island has the policies in place to support strong families.
It was no surprise that students, their parents and the audience raised many more issues that are at the forefront of current conversations in our community. I was pleased to express my support for better and newer schools, keeping education as a priority, and addressing our government’s dangerously mounting debt. I am also in favor of the efforts to roll back the raises of elected officials.
It is clear that the future holds significant challenges for our island. The willingness of Simon Sanchez students and others attending to do something about it is tremendously inspiring.
